Full confession here: I am a shopaholic – I literally get an endorphin rush when I buy something I like and can spin into a depression episode if I really want something and can’t buy it. Over the years I have realized how not only unhealthy this behavior is but how my frequent shopping was holding me back from other areas in my life and last year I decided to stop the cycle. It was hard, there were times when I was moody for days over not buying something or I obsessively looked at something I wanted online every single day counting down until the 1st of the new month when my pre determined spending allowance would refresh. There were a few months where I missed the mark and over spent, there where a few impulse purchases and there were a few “must haves” I still don’t have because something better, shinier or just more available came along but overall I feel like I did really well. The really funny thing is I probably spent less on myself in 2017 than any year since I was in college yet I enjoyed the things I spent my money on in total more. So with the new year I’m going through the same process – I’ve flipped through Ninna Garcia’s 100 again, I’ve taken a mental inventory of what I own and thought about what I feel is missing. I’m sure like last year there will be plenty of trend purchases and things I never knew I “needed” until I saw it but for now here’s my starting list of things to buy in 2018.
Cashmere Cardigan
Denim Skirt
Silk Blouse
In 2017 I got a few trendy tops but mostly I added a lot of tees to my collection. Don’t get me wrong, a great tee is a wonderful basic to have but sometimes you just need a little more. A silk blouse can make a blazer and skirt or slacks into a suit substitute, dress up a pair of jeans or go under a cardigan for a polished but still casual vibe. I’d like to see myself get at least two – one in a neural color and one fun color.
Gold Wedges
Quilted Ballet Flats
Silver Pointy Heel
Kendra Scott Earrings
My list this year is small because it’s pretty focused. Last year I tried to focus on one item a month but I quickly learned that’s tricky because I might focus on jeans one month and then miss the perfect pair of shoes as a result so this year I think my keeping my list smaller it also gives me more flexibility – If I was able to buy everything in one swoop I’d just buy everything linked here (well in my size, I linked plus and straight sizes for y’all) but I plan on coming back to this post and chipping away at this list throughout the year since I do still have to work with a monthly budget. Fashion also isn’t my only hobby so sometimes it’s hard to find a balance.
