I’m always trying to think of new ideas for the blog – sometimes it feels like throwing darts and seeing if one hits but it’s always fun to be creative and come up with new things. On my insta stories recently I posed the idea of talking about events before I attend them and what to wear and most people felt like that sounded fun so I thought we’d give it a try.
This weekend is the annual Soup Sunday event in Memphis. This is honestly one of my favorite fundraisers of the year – while a lot of fundraisers can be all about getting dressed up and being a whos who of Memphis Soup Sunday is accessible and fun for everyone. Adult tickets are $20 and family packs which include 2 adults and 2 kids are $50 and funds benefit Youth Villages.
The event takes place in the FedEx Forum and over 40 restaurants will have tables set up in the Plaza level providing tasting our soups, breads and desserts. It’s a lot of standing in line or walking around so to me this is not an event to wear a new pair of shoes or cute heels and I tend to go for comfort. I think of soup as cozy comfort food and so my outfit is a reflection of that. In the past I have worn jeans a solid cotton top and a cardigan sweater and this year will be no exception. Dressing in layers gives flexibility if you start to feel warm but still allows you to dress for the season.
When I go to a tasting event the last thing I need is to carry a bunch of stuff so I tend to either skip the purse and just have my cell and cards in my pocket or carry a small cross body – this year I will be going with the cross body.
Of course I always like to look sure and fashionable when I attend an event but I don’t consider chowing down on chowder to be a dress to impress event and my event style will reflect that. One thing to note on the food – do not be deceived by the small sample sizes! On our first visit I was grumpy at the small samples and figured I’d leave the event still hungry – big mistake – we only made it to 1/2 the tables before we felt stuffed. In subsequent years we learned to get one sample to share and only get our own samples for soups we know we’ll really love – like a beer cheese soup – so that we can have the room to sample from every restaurant. Also, they will give out cardboard cup holders at the event but most seasoned attendees know to bring a muffin pan from home – this allows you to collect several samples and then stop at one of the tables areas to enjoy and socialize, I don’t know about y’all but I hate standing and eating.
These Neiman Marcus sweaters have been very popular, the “biggest hit” of my blog if you will so if you’re thinking cozy give one a try
Of course, you can never go wrong with a affordable classic – these are all under $40
Or you know, just shop your closet – I did! You might have noticed that all the outfits I’m considering I’ve been wearing since the fall.
I hope this post has given you a few ideas on what to wear this weekend or to other food festival types of events and if you’re in the Memphis area I hope I’ll see you there!
