New Year, New Wardrobe . . .just kidding! If you offered to buy me a new wardrobe this time last year I would have been all over it but this year I would politely decline because there’s too many items I wouldn’t want to part with. I know I’ve made several posts here about my “closet project” and I’m sorry if I sound dramatic about it but y’all I am just so proud of myself.

Sketch of my favorite outfit of 2017

Full confession here: I am a shopaholic – I literally get an endorphin rush when I buy something I like and can spin into a depression episode if I really want something and can’t buy it. Over the years I have realized how not only unhealthy this behavior is but how my frequent shopping was holding me back from other areas in my life and last year I decided to stop the cycle. It was hard, there were times when I was moody for days over not buying something or I obsessively looked at something I wanted online every single day counting down until the 1st of the new month when my pre determined spending allowance would refresh. There were a few months where I missed the mark and over spent, there where a few impulse purchases and there were a few “must haves” I still don’t have because something better, shinier or just more available came along but overall I feel like I did really well. The really funny thing is I probably spent less on myself in 2017 than any year since I was in college yet I enjoyed the things I spent my money on in total more. So with the new year I’m going through the same process – I’ve flipped through Ninna Garcia’s 100 again, I’ve taken a mental inventory of what I own and thought about what I feel is missing. I’m sure like last year there will be plenty of trend purchases and things I never knew I “needed” until  I saw it but for now here’s my starting list of things to buy in 2018.

Skinny Jeans
My top missing item right now is a pair of skinny jeans. Jeans mind you, not jeggings. I’ve always been a fan of a flare jean with heels but as I have worn flats and boots more frequently I’ve decided I really need more of a fitted or tapered leg style. I wear jeans to work at least 3 times a week so I feel like I can justify adding another pair to the rotation.

Cashmere Cardigan
This one was on my list last year but then never happened – I never seemed to catch the sales at the right time and had hoped to spend under $100. This year I just need to suck it up and make it a priority although I would like to stay under $150 with this attempt. I plan on buying this year’s cardigan in camel and then adding other colors over the years.

Denim Skirt
A denim skirt was also on my 2017 list but I had the hardest time finding one. I need one to be knee length, not skin tight and not ripped. Personally I hate the ripped denim look that has been sooooo popular lately, why would I pay for clothes that look old and worn?

Silk Blouse

In 2017 I got a few trendy tops but mostly I added a lot of tees to my collection. Don’t get me wrong, a great tee is a wonderful basic to have but sometimes you just need a little more. A silk blouse can make a blazer and skirt or slacks into a suit substitute, dress up a pair of jeans or go under a cardigan for a polished but still casual vibe. I’d like to see myself get at least two – one in a neural color and one fun color.

Gold Wedges

Yet another I missed out on it from the 2017 list. I found a great pair last year for $140 and was optimistic they would go on sale, they sold out instead. I really miss my old gold wedges, which sadly aren’t made anymore, and find a metallic shoe to be a great neutral that’s a lot of fun. The wedge style keeps it casual IMO.

Quilted Ballet Flats
What I would REALLY love is a pair of Chanel flats but I’m not sure I’m ready to spend $500 on a pair of shoes just yet. In 2017 I got my first pair of Tory Burch flats and they have been fabulous, I certainly want to build a small collection of flats so I don’t wear the same pair and wear them out like I’m doing currently.

Silver Pointy Heel

Scroll through my IG feed and you’ll pretty much see me wearing the same four pairs of shoes. I LOVE my silver heels but I’ve just worn them out and it’s time for new. Like a god wedge I think these are a great neutral – they’re also grerat for trips because they look awesome with jeans but can dress up a plain black dress.

Kendra Scott Earrings

I usually buy a few pairs of Kendra Scott earrings each year because I consider them to be very versatile, good quality and always in style. I’m partial to the Danielle which I have in red, green, blue, pearl and then a similar variation in red, pink and turquoise so I’m thinking black and purple will be the colors I add this year – maybe yellow. There’s also other Kendra styles I like and I’m slowing branching out  – in fact a new collection drops today that takes the Danielle stone and gives it a frameless setting but I need to see them in person before adding that style to my list.

My list this year is small because it’s pretty focused. Last year I tried to focus on one item a month but I quickly learned that’s tricky because I might focus on jeans one month and then miss the perfect pair of shoes as a result so this year I think my keeping my list smaller it also gives me more flexibility – If I was able to buy everything in one swoop I’d just buy everything linked here (well in my size, I linked plus and straight sizes for y’all) but I plan on coming back to this post and chipping away at this list throughout the year since I do still have to work with a monthly budget. Fashion also isn’t my only hobby so sometimes it’s hard to find a balance.

I’d love to know what’s on your 2018 wish list – anything here you like or are you headed in a completely different direction?
