My rule of thumb when adding something to my closet is that I need to style it at least three ways. Wearing the same outfit gets very boring and I’m too value conscious to buy things that aren’t versatile.
With the weather cooling down I find myself wearing lots of sweaters. Sweaters are soft and cozy, what’s not to love? There are three main ways I style sweaters.
Simple with Skinny Jeans
Before working from home this was the most common way I would wear my sweaters. This look is easy to throw together and run out the door. I think wearing ballet flats with skinny jeans is a chic classic look. I will sometimes wear booties for a more trendy look. I’ve learned over the years that jewelry and sweaters are not a great mix but I do like to add statement earrings on ocassion. Because I don’t wear much jewelry with my sweaters I do like to add a headband in a coordinating color for a little extra style.

Make a Statement Skirt
I really like skirts and have quite a few fun ones. Pairing sweaters with skirts allows me to wear them in cooler weather while still looking seasonal. Since skirts tend to come in more colors and prints than pants it’s also a fun way to play with texture and color. I have three velvet skirts that I only wear in cooler weather but I will wear skirts from the spring or summer with a sweater if I can make the colors work.

Layer with Leggings
If a sweater is long enough than I will wear it with leggings and top with a jacket. I like to keep this look casual with some fun sneakers but it would work with ballet flats or boots to dress it up a bit. Leggings, a sweater and a cute headband is pretty much my work week uniform these days as I am working from home. I am strict about only wearing leggings with structure when I wear them as my bottom.
