One thing I’m really into these days is homemade products. Is there anything less fun to spend money on than shower cleaner? Me thinks not. I’m so tired of running to target for basic household supplies and walking out with an $80 bill and for what, a bunch of crap I can’t even pronounce mixed in a plastic bottle. Nope, it’s time to shop smarter. So far this year I’ve made our own laundry detergent and bathroom cleaner, both have been fab but I want to make fun stuff too and cleaning my toilet just doesn’t get me excited. So I decided to make a product that I seem to run through frequently: sugar scrub!
Sugar scrub , btw, is kinda hard to find. Target only sells one expensive version of it with their “fancy” beauty products and WalMart offers two different scents for about $7 for 8oz. It’s winter, I get dry skin y’all, I NEED my scrub. My big problem with commercial scrubs is they have too much oil, I want to feel clean coming out of the shower, not like I spent a week at McDonalds. Some of y’all may recall that I use oil to clean my face, it’s fantastic! So I’m not opposed to oil on my skin but there’s is a fine balance to be had. I’ve heard that coconut oil is great for skin and doesn’t leave a nasty film so when we were running low in the kitchen I decided to give the project a try, it was so easy!
To make your own sugar scrub here’s what you need:

The essential oils of your choice.
Seriously, that’s it! I didn’t even measure anything, but here’s what I did do:
1. Since I made this when my oil was low I heated it up directly in the jar (lid removed of course) in the microwave for about 30 seconds.
2. Then I spooned in sugar and mixed every few spoonfuls until I was happy with the consistency, which was on the drier side. I’d say I used a 3 to 1 sugar to oil ratio – 1/3 cup of oil and 1 cup of sugar
3. I then added about an ounce of vitamin E oil and mixed, this little bit went a long way.
4. I added a few drops of essential oil. Right now I have a few bottles of cheaper brand I got off amazon a few years ago, they’re fine for projects like this where they are just for scent but in the future I’ll be investing in higher quality stuff. I had tea tree and lemon on hand so that’s what I used
5. After a few final stirs and determining the scent level to be at my liking I put the jar on the lid, removed the label, shook it up for a final mixing and put it in the bathroom.

I’ve used my sugar scrub for a few weeks twice a week now and am so in love! It keeps my skin from getting itchy, doesn’t leave an oily film, doesn’t sting on my shaved legs, and is gentle enough to use on my face. I didn’t buy anything special for this project but the main ingredient is also the cheapest – sugar is only a few dollars for a 4lb bag, coconut oil is about $8 for a 16oz jar, vitamin e oil is a few dollars for an 8 oz jar and the essential oil price will vary. I’d guesstimate it cost me $3ish for a batch (I’m a finance person y’all so I’m pretty good at adding and diving in my head) and I genuinely like it better than the stuff from the store. This project was a total win for me and I can’t wait to try more stuff.
